Bustin' some Myths

A few months ago, I drew some 'pencil vomit' after I heard about the death of my last remaining Grandmother. The piece wound up really nice, and on Thursday, I did a companion to it.

The first is 'Icare'. It's based off the Greeco-Roman legend of Icarus, son of Daedalus. The two were imprisoned by Minos to protect the secret of the Minotaur's labyrinth. They managed to escape, flying on wings of wax and feathers. Daedalus warned his son not to fly to high, but the boy did anyways. The sun melted his wings, and he fell to his death in the sea.

The second is 'Guinvare' based off the English sub-myth of King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, and Sir Lancelot. Like Icarus, Guinevere did something she was warned not to - loving Sir Lancelot, and betraying her king. Because of the triangle, Arthur's kingdom was torn and nearly destroyed. She fell, as Icarus did, though not in such a literal sense. And, like the boy, she probably enjoyed herself before she fell.
(Note: though not intentionally, these two images focus on two complimenting elements - Wind and Water. Icarus is wind, for his wings, and Guinevere is water, for she is sometimes believed to be the same figure in legend as the Lady of the Lake. Both are also vaguely hinted at in each piece - Icarus falls into the sea, and Guinevere is falling from the sky.)
By the way, the movie 'Enchanted' is... wonderful. Not only is it Disney going back(ish) to their roots with cell animation, but they also have the guts to make fun of themselves. A charming movie with some stunning effects. My only gripe about it is I wish they had focused a bit more on the daughter. But, it was still fun, and I laughed until my ribs hurt at some parts. Worth seeing.
