Highlander Comix shut down for good yesterday.

This place was... part of my freaking childhood. They were originally located three blocks from my house. The area was over-run by yuppies, though, and they were forced out. I'd only been there once, but they gave me free pokemon cards. I was sad when they left.

I was ecstatic, though, to find out that they had only moved. I kept planning to go down there.

Unfortunately, they closed for good before I got a chance.

A whole lot of those stores I used to love are closing down because they can't make it. There was a little goth studio called Dark Light Designs that I liked near my house, but they also fell victim to yuppies. A block down from them was Simple Foods, a nice little organic market/deli. They shut down just last month, suffering due to a nearby Sunflower Organic Grocery store stealing their customers. Next door to them was Mountain Man Fruit and Nut Candy Co, which had closed once before, and did so again.

I guess... what I'm trying to say is... I hate Yuppies. They're slowly destroying bits of my childhood.

I hate when the "big chain" stores choke out the "Mom & Pop" stores.

In my neighborhood, two stores were closed in the past six months due to a Starbucks and a Barnes & Noble coming in. Which was really sad because the two places were there for years and were a staple of the area.

I prefer the "Mom & Pop" places because they provide better customer service and are more personable on many levels.

I worked at a 'mom and pop' hardware store last fall and winter. Honestly, compared to places like Home Depot, it was a lot nicer. We didn't have the same selections, but the customers were always grateful to have help that really took time to, y'know, HELP.

I'm just really glad the neighborhood stopped a WalMart from coming in. That would have sucked.
