Anyone remember this post? Well, it may not be Nathan Fillion and John Leguizamo, but my friends and I did put on a Las Vegas-set version of Two Gentlemen for the Public School Shakespeare Fest (or at least the final scene):

I play Valentine, the '70s Elvis.

This was filmed in a classroom the day before the fest, because the fest has been so noisy in past years that it's nearly impossible to get decent sound. But there are some pics under the cut of the fest itself!

This was when we were getting ready before going to the fest itself, which took place in and around the city's performing arts center. That's my friend D on the left, Penguin in the middle, and myself on the right. Also on the right is my mom, and the back of my other friend Fez's head.

So the fest is for all public schools in the city, from Kindergarten all the way through Senior year of high school. That's really what makes it fun - you get to watch little kids enthusiastically sword fight without knowing what's going on, and then you can turn around and watch a high schooler give an emotional monologue from Othello. But the best part is the parade from the downtown to the arts complex, lead by Queen Elizabeth I and the Bard.

See, the parade is fantastic. Here you can see D again, and right next to her is Fez, who was carrying our... um... 'School Banner'.

If you can read the sign, it says 'North Twisted Theatre', a name this group chose when we did our first Shakespeare fest - a Goth version of Midsummer Night's Dream. All of our performances are kind of, well, Twisted, hence the name. Also, the 'banner' was supposed to resemble a sandwich board advertising a casino.

My dad is a camera ninja. Somehow he could always get ahead of us, above us, etc, without us ever seeing him. And if you're wondering what I'm holding there, it's a portable iPod stereo that we had blasting Elvis songs like 'Viva Las Vegas' and 'Jailhouse Rock' during the parade. It got a lot of people dancing to it :D

On to the performance!

How use doth breed a habit in a man! Why yes, I do enjoy hamming it up.

We had a flow chart to explain the events leading up to this scene, which was on the back of the sandwich board. It actually wound up pretty confusing, but that made it kind of fun.

Madam, this service I have done for you, to hazard life, and rescue you from him, that would have forced your honor and your love... So, this scene called for 6 people, but we only had 4, so two people had to play multiple roles. And that would up being Penguin and D. This is their first appearance, Penguin playing Proteus, another Elvis, and D playing Silvia, a showgirl.

Oh miserable, unhappy that I am!

Had I been seized by a hungry lion, I would have been breakfast to the beast, rather then have false Proteus rescue me! PAY NO ATTENTION TO ME, I AM A SHRUBBERY.

Unhappy were you, Madam, err I came... Also, check out our sweeet one armed bandit there. See, the script called for an 'Outlaw' to shout 'A prize! A prize! A prize!' at the entrance of the Duke, but we didn't have enough people for it, so we made a slot machine that played winning noises for that line. (It's in the video, but Fex forgot that we cut the bandit role and said the line anyways, and you can't see the machine in the frame.)

I'll woo you like a soldier, at arm's end, and love you 'gainst the nature of love - force ye!

Thou common friend, that's without faith or love!

Oh, good sir, I have mistook. This is the ring you sent to Silvia.

BEHOLD!
HOT DAMN, FEZ. Okay, quick explanation. We originally cast Fez as the Outlaw, with another girl as Julia, who for most of this scene is in disguise as a page boy. But that person decided not to stay with the group, so we cast Fez in her place. Which turned out FANTASTIC, because Fez looks AMAZING in drag. Seriously, look at him. The audience cheered and whistled when he pulled off his shirt, and the buttons on it actually popped off and flew into the crowd. It was amazing.

Were man but constant, he were pefect! Jesus, Fez is a sexier girl then the rest of us on stage XD

Forbear, forbear, I say! It is my lord the Duke! So, D played two roles as Silvia and Silvia's father, The Duke (see, her hat says so and everything), and Penguin played Proteus, Valentine's ex-friend, and Thurio, Silvia's fiance.

Of course, at one point right after The Duke's entrance, both Thurio and Valentine were supposed to gesture towards Silvia. So D just popped her hat off for a moment, then put it back on. Easiest and most confusing costume change at once!

The more degenerate and base art thou!

I think the boy hath grace in him - he blushes.

And lastly, a group shot with our Shakespeare Fest Club sponsor, Mr. Kane.

So, by no means are we good actors, but that's not really the point. This is the fourth time I've been in Shakespeare Fest - the first was in 8th grade for a scene from Two Gentlemen in which I played Julia's maid, and a friend of mine played Julia, and we actually played the scene straight. The second and third were for 9th and 10th grade, with a group similar to this one, in which we did Goth Midsummer's Night Dream (I was Puck) and Samurai King Leer (I was Kent), both done as comedies. I've learned that it's just a lot more fun to perform Shakespeare as a comedy, to not take it too seriously, and to just have a good time with it.

Also, we did this back in early May, but I just now got around to posting about it. >.
